Abdulkhaleq Abdullah released after 10 days of reported detention

High-profile Emirati academic and political science professor Dr. Abdulkhaleq Abdullah was released on Thursday the 26th of Jan, 2017 after being reportedly arrested for ten days by the UAE State Security Apparatus.

Dr. Abdulkhaleq Abdulla was disappearance from twitter on Monday the 16th of Jan, raising a lots of questions over his whereabouts.

Rights groups believed that he was arrested due to his latest tweets criticising the UAE authorities' restrictions on freedom of expression.

Ten days after his suspicious disappearance, he returned to social media with a cryptic tweet saying  "I am returning after a 10-day interruption. I was on a surprise trip that was enjoyable and extremely beneficial. It will be the start of a new phase of communication with followers. Thank you."

Dr. Abdulkhaleq is not the first UAE academic who was arrested for his views in the Gulf country. Dr Nasser Bin Ghaith is still being held in the UAE jails on charges based on tweets he posted about the Egyptian regime and meetings with peaceful political activists.
