British book community calls for raising awareness about human rights violations during Dubai LitFest

Members of the British book community are encouraging writers who would participate at the Emirates Festival of Literature, to consider raising awareness of the human rights abuses carried out by the festival’s sponsors.

The Think Twice campaign was launched last year to highlight the oppression of free speech and human rights in the UAE. Although the organisers will not be continuing their campaign this year, the International Campaign for Freedom in the UAE (ICFUAE) is encouraging authors participating in the Festival to raise awareness of the lack of human rights in the UAE.

British children's author Jonathan Emmett and book blogger Zoe Toft declared that the campaign would be contentious.

The campaign aims at encouraging British writers to learn more about the plight of fellow academics, writers and bloggers jailed in the UAE and to raise awareness of them.
