Concerns Raised over the Safety of Ahmed Mansoor

Rights groups raise concerns over the safety of a prominent Emirati political prisoner after leaked letters he wrote on his health situation.

Human Rights Watch wrned that the prominent political prisoner Ahmed Mansoor is in real danger in UAE custody.

According to the rights group, leading rights defender Ahmed Mansoor may face retaliation after he leaked a letter detailing his mistreatment whilst in Emirati detention and his flagrantly unfair trial.

The group also pointed out that UAE authorities are in violation of their obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which the UAE ratified in 2012.

Last week, Ahmed Mansoor revealed, in a series of letters which were smuggled out of al-Sadr prison, the torture and abuse he has been subjected to since his arrest in March 2017.

Ahmed Mansoor detailed the violations and ill-treatment he faced while in solitary confinement. He said in his handwritten letters that he recorded the details of his court hearings and the various fair trial violations he suffered in the Federal Court of Appeals in Abu Dhabi and the Federal Supreme Court.
