Margaret Ferrier MP Announces Launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights in the Gulf

Margaret Ferrier MP announced today the formation of an All Party Parliamentary Group on Democracy and Human Rights in the Gulf. The announcement came today at a seminar organised by Amnesty International that focused on the practice of stripping of the nationality of political activists as a punishment by Gulf states such as the UAE. 

The new parliamentary group will address the increasing concerns around the human rights violations in the UAE and other Gulf countries. The strong ties that the UK government holds with the Gulf countries raise ethical questions due to their human rights record. 

Since 2011, the UAE government has clamped down on the rights to freedom of expression, fair trial and freedom from torture, affecting Emirati activists and foreign citizens alike. 

Margaret Ferrier, SNP member and MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West will chair the new committee.
