Report of the Group of Eminent International and Regional Experts on Yemens condemns UAE human rights violations

A report published this week by the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen has outlined detailed findings that condemn the UAE and Saudi Arabia as culpable in committing gross human rights violations and possible war crimes in Yemen.

The Group, mandated to investigate violations by parties involved in the conflict, found probable cause in believing that the parties accused are responsible for an array of human rights and international humanitarian law violations in Yemen, some of which may equate to war crimes.

Some parties to the conflict, in particular the United Arab Emirates, chose not to cooperate with the group of experts at all. Indeed, in recent years, the UAE has become increasingly reticent and dismissive with regard to international human rights mechanisms.

Despite the lack of cooperation, the experts have gathered a wide range of evidence related to allegations of international law violations since September 2014, concluding that members of the coalition, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, “bear enormous responsibility” and “must take action against those within their ranks who are responsible.”
