ICFUAE: Appointing UAE envoy to UN as Counter-Terrorism Committee chair is alarmed

Lana Nusseibeh, the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the UN has been named the new chair of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee.

The seasoned diplomat has served as the UAE Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN since 2013.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) was established in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks against the US in 2001.

ICFUAE Press Release:

ICFUAE expresses deep concerns over the UN controversial move that came despite the UAE’s deeply flawed criminal justice system and its well-documented use of over broad counterterrorism legislation to arbitrarily repress dissidents and activists.

In September 2021, UAE authorities designated four prominent exiled Emirati dissidents as “terrorism” supporters.

The move was part of a continuing attempt to outlaw activism and free expression under the guise of counterterrorism.
