Factsheet: Free the last female political prisoners in UAE Jails (Maryam al-Balushi & Amina al-Abdouli)

Although the United Arab Emirates (UAE) promotes itself as a modern country that respects women's rights and gender equality, women remain oppressed under a biassed political framework, firmly built upon unequal gendered values.

Women in the UAE continue to face incredible barriers to their rights to civic freedoms by state and non-state actors.

Maryam al-Balushi and Amina al-Abdouli are Emirati women activists who have both been imprisoned since 2015. They have been detained ever since after having been tried and charged in breach of international standards due process and fair trial standards.
