Amina Al Abdouli: Another victim of UAE's indefinite detention policy

Amina Al Abdouli has been detained in the UAE since 2015, and tried and charged in breach of international standards on detention and fair trials.

Despite her sentences having come to an end, she remains behind bars, held in an inhumane conditions at al-Wathba Prison, Abu Dhabi.

Reports indicate that her mental and physical health has suffered severely during their detention, with an inadequate support offered by the Emirati authorities.

Amina Al Abdouli was arrested at her home on 19th November 2015, without a warrant, by officers from the State Security wearing civilian clothing.

She was subsequently disappeared and taken to a secret detention centre where she was subjected to severe acts of torture, including being stripped naked, beaten, blind-folded, bound at the feet, and sleep deprived.

On 31st October 2016, Al Abdouli was sentenced to five years in prison, and a fine of 500,000 AED, with no right of appeal.

On 28th April 2021, she was sentenced to an additional three years in prison for “publishing information that disturbs the public order” (case No. 61/2021)

According to a direct source to ICFUAE, she was transferred from Al Wathba prison in summer of 2020 alongside Maryam Al Balushi, but their current whereabouts are unknown

On 15th April 2021, MENA Rights Group referred case to the Secretary-General on intimidation and reprisals for cooperation with the UN in the field of human rights.

On 29th September 2021, the UN Secretary-General raised Al Abdouli’s case in 2021 report on reprisals against individuals who cooperate with the UN in the field of human rights.
